A visual representation of community engagement, vibrancy and energy.

Threads on Redchurch

Threads is a suspended installation composed of thousands of colourful ribbons, each one hand-tied by members of the local community. Hovering above Redchurch Street in Shoreditch, London, the ribbons create a vibrant, ever-shifting tapestry that dances in the wind and catches the light — a poetic mirror of the street’s energy and character.

The choice of composition and colour was directly influenced by the street itself. Tones were drawn from the façades of surrounding buildings — from the green tiles of Labour and Wait to the deep blue of Shoreditch Arts Club. The layout of the ribbons echoes the language of weaving, creating a flowing structure that brings these inspirations together in a unified form.

The artwork is a celebration of collective making, everyday creativity and community presence. Each ribbon symbolises an individual’s contribution, woven together into a shared expression of connection, care and belonging.

As part of the project, a series of workshops were held at Rich Mix, inviting local shop owners, school groups and residents to tie their own ribbon and become a tangible part of the artwork.

Each thread moves with the breeze, catching the light and echoing the spirit of Redchurch Street below — a quiet, heartfelt gesture made visible, handmade and interwoven.
