Alice Billings Connents

Elegant and refined wayfinding, echoing the materiality, forms and texture of the space

In collaboration with Hive Curates and Creative Land Trust, we developed a visual identity for a new inclusive arts and culture programme based on Stratford High Street, Newham. Alice Billings Connects (ABC) serves as a vital link between community groups, creative organisations, and local young people, using art and culture as a catalyst for engagement and exchange.

Our design approach centred on crafting a bold, attention-grabbing, and accessible brand system that would establish a distinctive and recognisable identity for ABC. The programme’s location, The Alice Billings House, played a pivotal role in shaping the visual language. Inspired by the building’s architectural style and its relationship with the surrounding area, we developed a design system rooted in its forms and heritage. This led to the creation of graphic shapes that act as apertures and frames, structuring imagery and information within them to create a dynamic yet cohesive visual narrative.

This concept extends beyond branding into the signage and wayfinding strategy for the soon-to-be refurbished Grade II listed Victorian firemen’s accommodation. By integrating the brand’s visual language into spatial navigation, the system enhances accessibility for both visitors and resident artists, ensuring a seamless and engaging experience throughout the space.

Holistic Integration.

Inspired by the building’s architectural style and its relationship with the surrounding area, we developed a design system rooted in its forms and heritage. This led to the creation of graphic shapes that act as apertures and frames, structuring imagery and information within them to create a dynamic yet cohesive visual narrative.

Wayfinding routed in context.

The wayfinding strategy was carefully designed to respond to the building’s footprint and irregular layout, forming the foundation of the system. This approach allowed each sign type to adopt a unique contextual shape, seamlessly integrating with its surroundings.
